Creating a New User Account
The default user account on your PC (eightvirtues)
is configured to automatically log in for convenience but there are
many reasons to set up a multi user system. If you have a spouse or
significant other, children, or roommates separate user
accounts
allow each person to have their own desktop, home directory,
application settings, screen resolution, and more.
- Click System
on the Main Menu.
- Click Administration.
- Click Users
and Groups.
- Enter your password since this is an administrative
task.
The Users settings
window should appear, listing all users.
The user root
is the built-in system administrator account, and
generally should be left alone. If you delete this account you will not
have full administrative capability on your system.- Open the Account
Properties window for the user Eight Virtues by
doing one of the following:
- Select the user Eight Virtues in
the Name
column and click the Properties
button.
- Double-click the user Eight Virtues in
the Name
column.
- The Account
'eightvirtues' Properties window should appear,
showing all properties and settings of the user. This is the user that
logs in automatically when you start the computer, and has
administrative capabilities. Take a moment to look at its properties
and settings by clicking on the User
PrivilegesAdvanced
tabs. When
finished, click the Cancel
button to return to the Users
settings
window. and
- Now we will add a new user by clicking the Add User button.
The New
user account window should appear. Notice it looks
very much like the properties window for the Eight Virtues
account we
opened a moment ago.- Enter a name for the new user in the Username: field.
The
username should begin with a lower case letter followed by lower case
letters and numbers. A hyphen or dash may also be used. Some examples
are: kids-login,
janedoe,
and momisnumber1.
- Enter a descriptive name for the new user in the Real name:
field. Some examples are: Kid's
Login, Jane
Doe, and Mom
is Number 1.
- You may choose a profile by clicking the Profile: drop
down. The three choices are Administrator,
Desktop User,
and Unprivileged.
These profiles change settings on the User Privileges
tab, so you may change them later with greater specificity when we
discuss that tab.
- You may fill out the fields under Contact Information
but this is not necessary.
- Enter a secure password in both the User password: and Confirmation:
fields.
- Now click the User
Privileges tab.
- Depending on which profile you chose earlier various
items
will be checked or unchecked. You may customize what this user account
will and will not be able to do by checking or unchecking the
corresponding items here. Generally most accounts should have Administer the system unchecked and Use audio
devices, Use
CD-ROM
drives, Use
floppy drives, and Use
scanners checked.
- Click the Advanced
tab.
- The Home
directory: field shows the path (the location on
the file system or hard drive) of the user's home directory. If you're
familiar with Microsoft Windows then think of the home directory as the
user's My Documents
folder. You may leave this field as it is.
- The Shell:
field may be left alone.
- The Main
group: drop down defines the primary group the
user belongs to. Groups are used for security to determine what level
of access users have to programs, files, and directories. Generally
the group users
should be chosen from the drop down, but for special
purposes you may choose or create another group.
- The User
ID: field shows the unique number assigned to this user.
You may leave this field as it is.
- When satisfied with the new user's settings click the
OK
button.
- Click the Close
button on the Users
settings window.
- You have now just finished creating your first new
user!
Log out of your system and log in with the new user to give it a spin.

Disabling Automatic User Login if you want the login screen
to appear every time you boot the PC rather than having the eightvirtues
account automatically log in.
