Enabling and Disabling Desktop Effects
Desktop Effects enable a compositing window manager called Compiz that
assumes the role of presenting and drawing the desktop and program
windows. It allows the desktop to have such effects as shadows,
transparency, wobbly windows, desktop-on-a-cube, and many other types
of eye candy. However 3D games such as Neverball and Nexuiz are
adversely affected by these effects and as a result have a low frame
rate, or in other words become “choppy”. The
instructions
below show you how to enable or disable Desktop Effects to suit your
purpose.
- Method 1:
Click System
on the Main Menu.- Click Preferences.
- Click GL
Desktop.
- The Gnome
Compiz Preferences
window should appear. You may also quickly access this window by
clicking the black Gnome icon in the middle of the top panel next to
the volume control icon (it looks like a black cartoon foot).
- To enable Desktop Effects check the Enable GL Desktop
checkbox. To disable Desktop Effects uncheck the Enable GL Desktop
checkbox.
- After Desktop Effects have been enabled you will be
prompted with a window asking if you would like to keep the current
settings. Click the Keep
Settings button to confirm the enabling of Desktop Effects.
- Click the Close
button when finished.
- Method 2:
- Click System
on the Main Menu.
Click Preferences.- Click Desktop
Effects.
- The Desktop
Effects window should appear. Click the Enable Desktop Effects
button.
- If Desktop Effects were already enabled, they will
now be disabled and you may click the Close button.
- If Desktop Effects were not already enabled, they
now are
and you will be prompted with a window asking if you would like to keep
the current settings. Click the Keep
Settings button to confirm the
enabling of Desktop Effects.
